For some reason, the TB is registered as having traveleld 225 miles - exactly twice the distance that it has done in reality. Not sure how this happened. Will just have to remember to subtract 112.5 every time I recalculate :-(

Isn't it time that we had an updated race report we know for definate that Forces of Nature - Morgan has moved over 100 miles as we placed it into a cache in Devon on Saturday.

Tinkerbell's bug was finally placed in Blue yesterday; Samurais Bugs were also started off, in the Red cache, and theywere picked up this morning, so the race really is on for all the little bugs now :D

I hope so Al! Its all gone a bit quiet. I wanted to have the Guest Nest out this weekend in the hope that some new bugs would find their way over here :D

Anyone object to my underhand tactics of temporarilly renaming the travelbug for tactical gain?!?

Still, looks like mine may be jetting off soon anyway, but I suppose the US is the best location to clock up mileage:)

IdleRocks - 8-5-2007 at 05:59 PM

I notice Sarah and Jennie are on the move. Hope you get some distance :)

I might rename mine to 'Take me to New Zealand' :D

Red_Kite - 8-5-2007 at 09:01 PM

Hm maybe I could rename mine Fly me to the Moon. What do you think?

tortoiseshell - 9-5-2007 at 11:08 AM

As it happens my brother managed to get a TB out to New Zealand. he relewased it in 2003 and it's still in NZ!

As for "Fly me to the moon", I've just picked up a Luxembour geocoin. Its mission is to get to a cache in outer space somtime in the future...

They could at least have taken the extra time to spell check --- mileage ;)

Al.

EDIT... Just checked my dictionary and they say you can spell it either way so I'll just shut up and get back to work!

IdleRocks - 10-5-2007 at 05:10 PM

Who says blokes can't multi-task :)

rhayader_wanderer - 11-5-2007 at 08:03 AM

I was going to apologise to Tinkerbells duck for failing to find it some water and for not making it onto a nature reserve cache I had in mind but had never visited.

I was going to console it by saying the cache I opted for had regular visits and it shouldn't be there for long.

I was going to do that but wont as it was picked up within 24 hours and is on the move again.

BTW for these sneaky renames to the states and NZ how about a handicap element to the race that subtracts the distance from Aber of the cache that the TB is in on the closing date from the distance traveled.

I can just see the name changes in Jan and Feb.. .. please get me to the UK.... pretty please get me to the uk..... anyone got a cheap ticket to NY so I can collect my bug..... :)

forcesofnature - 11-5-2007 at 10:03 AM

Ahhhh... Well the second part of the race from April 2008 will be a race back to Aber, so those that have made it to NZ or the moon will be handicapped then! :)

Al.

tortoiseshell - 17-5-2007 at 05:16 PM

Hi everyone - hope all is well.

Have been grounded quite a lot recently - stuck on 79 cache finds after a spectacular first part of 2007.

1. I'm not sure about the rules of the race anymore. Is it the one who gathers the most miles? Or is it the first one back to Aber? Or are there two races?

2. Can we go back to keeping a simple list of mileage so that everyone can edit it? I like the chart but could we also have the old list as well?

In the meantime - my bug has moved from Devon across to the Reading area. I had arranged for it to be dropped off at Heathrow but it didn't quite work out :(

TORTOISESHELL'S ABERYSTWYTH RACE TRAVELBUG: 230.3 MILES:)

hwyl!

T'shell

Twm-y-tonnau - 17-5-2007 at 09:52 PM

I think it’s the 2 races at the moment but how a about multi task race:

1.Furthest travelled by April 1st 2008
2.First to return back to Aberystwyth after that date
3.Most caches visited
4.Most Countys visited
5.Most Countries visited
6. Booby prize for least travelled

Double mileage for any cache visited with aber in the name eg: RAinBow sEries red
BEAch beRms
slippERy BAck

Any Thoughts?

forcesofnature - 18-5-2007 at 06:40 AM

Well, at the mo, the race is just to see who travels the farthest by April 1st 2008, and then after that the bugs will want to return to Aber, and no doubt their competitive spirit will make that a race too! :)

Of course anyone who wants to compare caches visited, counties visited etc. etc. can do so but we don't want to complicate things too much... Once the bugs are back we can compare things like that if we want, but trying to keep track of ll these things will ruin the focus.

As far as the list of mileage goes, it is still there for everyone to update, it was just that IdleRocks got bored one day and decided to add a little chart as well for visual impact.

I thought "interference" meant physically retreiving the TB from a cache - I didn't see any probs with contacting people who grabbed the TB...? Surely this is all part of the rough and tumble of a TB race? My role-models are Dastardly and Muttely of the Wacky Races!!! (evil cackle) :D

P.S. have changed the name of my TB again.

That's fine by me - it would add another 140 or so miles to the total! As it happens, I've just had a geocoin stuck on Dartmoor for a few months, only just been retrieved.

justanna - 21-5-2007 at 01:53 PM

Just noticed that Plugsie has picked up the Little Welsh Cache. We should probably point out that even though this is Al's brother and we have not given him any instructions to do anything with the cache (wouldn't want to be accused of interferring now would we ;))

They all seem to be moving along though

Come on Morgan :D

LOL... has he really! He must know that it is part of the aber-cachers race, but he is coming to this part of the world next week, so who knows where he will place it!

justanna - 21-5-2007 at 03:49 PM

How does the milage work anyway? Is it the furthest away from the start point or is it an accumulation of miles from cache to cache?

I hope he doesn't bring it back to the rainbow series!

IdleRocks - 21-5-2007 at 04:47 PM

If the TB goes around and around the Rainbow series it could accumulate a lot of miles without going anywhere :P

Anna, I unsderstand that it's the total number of miles. So technically yes you could just go round and round the Aberystwyth caches and win the race.

I'm hoping to put a TB hotel in Cardiff Bay this week...

I hope your desire to set up another TB prison in the area is a joke?! After having one of your TBs languish in a puzzle cache (sorry about that) you have first hand experience of the frustration of your traveller doing absolutely no travelling. TBs are meant to move, prisons require cachers to not move TBs or to have to imprison another TB to save one from further torment.

I do not mean any offense by this post but I find these prisons to be poles apart from the ethos of TBs and geocoins.

I hope you do place a cache, we need more, but just that. TBs and coins will pass through without having to be forced......honestly :)

Many thanks for the comments, celebr8. I had no ideas that TB hotels aroused such strong emotions.

You will also be interested that another Aber cacher, Red Kite, has recvently founded a TB hotel near Aberystwyth.

Having looked at this debate about travel bug hotels on groundspeak forums, I can only conclude that there are mixed feelings about TB hotels. Like marmite, some love em, some hate em. All I can say is that nobody will be "forced" to place a trackable there. You are welcome to rescue all the trackables from the hotel if you wish!

You describe the hotel as a "prison". If this is the case, then all I can do is to emphasise that all prisoners will be held in humane conditions, subject to the Geneva convention.

Your reference to my travelbug stuck in a puzzle cache seems to be an argument against puzzle caches rather than TB hotels?

I found the answers to not having a trackable doing any travelling is...buy more trackables!!!

Hi Celebr8

Welcome to Abercachers and I look forward to meeting you at Abercamp/massive whatever its going to be called :P
Tinkerbell is 8 and she always loves to meet new caching families too :)
I have heard of TB prisons and understand why some TB/GC Hotels could become one of these. I personally feel it is down to the cache owner to monitor the TBs/GCs to make sure that the trackables dont become imprisoned.
We have a TB/GC drop-in-centre which is really a hotel but we called it something slightly different because thats the way we are.
We decided that if the cache was well placed (right next to the A1) and we made sure that the trackables are moved on personally by us if they dont move within a certain time then our geoconscience's would be clear :D
I personally don't like to see TBs and GCs stuck in caches and only today I took Tinkerbell to visit one of our more remote caches to do some TB and geocoin swaps.
As well as keeping the cache energy fresh which I feel is important I have an alterior motive too. We participate in Cacher of the Month and get points for moving on and picking up trackables :o So...it helps us to help a poor imprisoned TB or GC.
Would I do this without the alterior motive?
A definate YES cos I like the icons and seeing new TBs lol

Just to waffle on a bit further about our drop-in-centre/hotel - Samurai Dan is partial to weekend caching with a caching friend. Sometimes he may come back with a big bag full of TBs and coins that he has collected from caches or swapped with his caching mate. Having this particular TB hotel helps to move on the trackables especially if we are not going out caching for a week or two.
The trackables seem to move on quickly and there are regular cachers that watch the cache for interesting icons or to swap their own TBs and coins. Sometimes we go along and swap some back!!!

Oooo I do like those icons :cool:

Red_Kite - 23-5-2007 at 10:09 PM

I agree Vanya. Sometimes a TB hotel, or whatever you call it, is an ideal place for people visiting from out of the area to drop all their coins and bugs into, for others to move around the local caches. Saves them the trouble if finding a suitable cache to put certain TBs in. I have had to hang onto TBS for some time because they are too big for the local boxes.

If there seems to be a bug imprisoned in the hotel, or indeed any of my other caches, I will go and collect it and move it on somewhere else. I have one cache which doesnt seem to get visited as much as the others and travellers do seem to get stuck in that one. I have to visit it soon and release a little bear.

I also like the icons but dont like to take bugs from my own caches. Just personal conscience. I will only move them on if they appear to be stuck. I do sometimes go and discover them though, if I like the icon :)

All part of the exctiement of a TB race I guess.... One of by TB's (Not in the race) has been in the same predicament for over a month. :(

I'm sure it will get moved on soon, and with a Bank Holiday weekend on its way there should be some action as far as the TB race goes... I know that The Little Welsh cache is in plugsie's hands and apparently isn't coming back to Aber!

Twm-y-tonnau - 24-5-2007 at 07:45 AM

Iawn Diolch Tortoiseshell a shwt ydych chi.
The ABER Bonus is just something we added for a bit of fun and as we do not make the rules, Al does. And as Al suggested in an earlier post it was best kept simple for this, the first Aber Cachers race.
The idea was that if your Bug was placed in a cache with the letters A, B, E & R in any order in its title – (RAinBow sEries red) and (BlAckdown hills aiRfiElds 3 Dunkeswell) in you case would give you a bonus of 2.
Yeah we were down Cardiff caching, I had my transplant down there and have to return every so often for check ups. So after a 100 mile journey and 3 hours at the Heath they were a very welcome break for a lovely bit of fresh air before heading home again. They were ideal for me as they were short and flat, better than having to sit in the car while the other half does the more strenuous ones.
We did three nice easy ones in Saundersfoot the other day, highly recommended for the ‘clapped out cacher’ like me.
By the way, I love marmite and agree very much with Vanyas post on Hotels and think it’s great that we now have one here in Ceredigion.
Mrs T.

Twm-y-tonnau - 24-5-2007 at 10:38 PM

Hope Dans TB gets dropped soon, theyre probably waiting for the Bank holiday.
Our Twm-y-Tonnau TB went straight to Canada, Great.:)
Then the cacher took 7 months to place it.
10 months before next pick up.
Now 4 months since last dropped.
Things take time out there, as caches get snowed in a lot.:o
We should all see some movement of the Abercacher TBs over the next few days.
Happy Caching to anyone planning on going out this weekend.

Red_Kite - 25-5-2007 at 09:19 PM

AW thats a sad tale! :(

I am still waiting to hear about the aberystwyth Diabetes TB which was coming from somewhere in the USA but the town was under abouro five feet of snow when they were released. I was in touch with the setters for a while but it has gone very quiet. I am not sure whether the whole thing has turned into a bit of a damp squib because they dont seem to be moving much :P

I amhoping to get down to aberaeron tomorrow do have a nice walk around the woods and maybe find Jennie's new cache.

Have a great weekend everyone ;)

Hi everyone,

Hope you had a good bank holiday. Found 1 cache in Pembs which takes me up to 80.

Well done Skateboarding Sarah!

Just to agree with all that has been said about TB hotels. As I don't get out caching as much as I would like, I do need somewhere handy to drop off TBs in my posession so they can move on. I will also be able to rescue TBs that have been stuck in the "hotel" too long.

Hope to launch it this week.

PS my signature TB (Tortie the Cat) has flown across the Atlantic!

Twm-y-tonnau - 2-6-2007 at 08:31 PM

Quote:

Geocaching.com - Travel Bug FAQ
Is there any Travel Bug etiquette?
Use the Golden Rule when you find a Travel Bug. Most owners would rather see their travel bugs do a lot of travelling, so try not to hold on to a travel bug for too long. If you plan on holding onto the bug for more than 2 weeks, make sure to send a courtesy email to the owner letting them know.

Lets Hope Dan has received his e-mail as its been some while now.

Red_Kite - 3-6-2007 at 11:57 AM

That would be nice. Or at least they could log it into a cache nearby to give it some mileage to where they have taken it.

Dear Tortoiseshell,

Having a lovely time in Cork City. My new friends took me to a pub and introduced me to Guinness, it tastes lovely. I'll be parking up soon in the cache at James's Fort near Kinsale. It's a popular spot for tourists so hopefully I will travel far far away from there. Can't wait!

Looks as though there has been some movement on a few of the racing bugs recently.. I shall check the stats later if I get the chance.

A few have been pretty stagnant as well though lets hope they haven't gone the same way as Red kites... Although you never know RK if it has been picked up by someone on holiday from far away they simply might not have had chance to log it yet... It could be on its way to New Zealand right this minute!

Congratulations to the Little Welsh cache on it's imminent victory on April 1st!

I've solemnly transferred my race bug to the "UK travelbug graveyard cache" (GCD653).

I'll be in Aber over easter - hope to have another bash at Allt Glais / Barking under the wrong tree - probably won't get any more done than that.

I don’t think its over yet tortoiseshell, I gather they have to start the journey back on April 1st 2008 so anything could happen. Has yours gone for sure tortoiseshell, I did wonder why you moved it but I see why now.

Red_Kite - 26-3-2008 at 11:41 PM

It's close at the top!! Love the flashing lights Mrs T!! LOL

forcesofnature - 27-3-2008 at 03:54 PM

Tortoiseshell... What makes you think your bug has definitely been lost in action?

I had a travel bug that disappeared (in someones possession) for 10 months but eventually turned up in another cache where someone found it... There's always hope!

Looks as though RK's bug has a bit of an advantage for the race back to Aber! :)

Al.

Red_Kite - 27-3-2008 at 11:44 PM

Guess thats one way of looking at it Al, if I can ever find out where it actually IS!

Twm-y-tonnau - 28-3-2008 at 08:09 PM

Wouldn’t it be good if they came with a micro chip that meant you could literary track them. :P

forcesofnature - 29-3-2008 at 12:57 PM

only a couple of days to go to the finish line!

Al.

tortoiseshell - 30-3-2008 at 03:42 AM

The great thing about the UK travelbug graveyard is that the trackable can always be grabbed and brought back to life if it does turn up.

I've sent about 6 emails to the person who last had it - no response :(

forcesofnature - 1-4-2008 at 02:05 PM

Well.. Its D-Day, and I think we all know who has won... Congratulations to 'The Little Welsh Cache'... A deserved winner as I think Twm-y-tonnau put more effort into his bug than most of us!!

I don't have time to go through each TB at the mo to get the final scores, but will try to do so later... Unless someone beats me to it :)

So, I guess it is a race back to Aber then... Time to change the mission statement on your bugs and get them back to a cache within Aberystwyth ASAP... May the best bug win (and lets hope those that are MIA turn up soon too).

Come home to Wales little bugs!!

Al.

How are the TB's doing on their way home??

Looks as though there are 4 in the UK, although I think RK's is missing??
Mine is in Deepest Darkest Texas somewhere!

Wonder if any will make it back to Aber by Xmas?

Al.

Red_Kite - 1-12-2008 at 12:19 AM

"although I think RK's is missing??"

Not any more!!! I had an email tonight from someone saying they had found it in a (old) coat pocket.

He has placed it in a cache but couldn't log it because it was reported missing in action.

So I unmarked it, replaced it in the cache it was taken from (which is now ARCHIVED!) and then retrieved it and placed it at its current location (The Sky is Falling/Cocky Locky GC1JFNR)

You never know... it might be the first one back home LOL But don't hold your breath.:D

Red_Kite - 1-12-2008 at 10:48 PM

well it's already on the move. Someone has picked it up today and placed it in a cache near Walsall. Grand total mileage now stands at 138 miles LOL.:P

Red_Kite - 2-12-2008 at 02:08 AM

More news on Al's TB. Someone in Texas has finally realised it should be heading home and is taking it east "hundreds of miles" to his home.. in Texas... oh well. at least its heading in the right direction :D

forcesofnature - 2-12-2008 at 07:13 AM

Yeeha... I think that's what they say in Texas!! ;)

Looks as though the race is on again.

I'M HOME!!!!:D

Didn't travel very far in the end but at least I got out of that bloke's pocket :P

Well done to Twm y Tonnau for what has to be the best trip ever though. New Zealand and back is pretty good going.

Come home all you little bugs..wherever you are.. hope the other missing ones show up soon

forcesofnature - 27-4-2009 at 12:54 PM

Yeeha.... We have a winner on the return trip then... See there are some advanatges to not winning the outbound race.

Al.

Red_Kite - 28-4-2009 at 09:52 PM

LOL I think it did the grand total of 400 miles. The funny thing is that between me and the Little Welsh Cache there was only ten miles difference before my final spurt:o

Red_Kite - 19-8-2009 at 11:02 PM

YAY!!! Morgan is home!!! He was dropped into Indigo cache today by LostnWet :P

Well done Morgan :)

Al.

Red_Kite - 24-8-2009 at 11:22 PM

Someone has been along and picked him up, not realising he had just made it home. They emailed me and asked what his new mission is. I advised them to contact you Al, and ask what they should do. Typical That happened to mine as well :P
